Person to person transmission
Researchers have highlighted how the virus can be transmitted between people infected, and this can happen in a number of ways:
Airborne
Current indications are that the virus can survive in the air for up to three hours. When someone breathes the air of the infected person in, they can contract the virus. It is unclear how many infections have occurred in this way.
Surface transmission
It is also possible for someone to come into contact with infected particles that have settled on a surface. It is also projected that the virus particles can stay alive on surfaces for up to two or three days if they are not sanitised.
Aerosols and droplets
Droplets are believed to be the most common form of transmission from an infected person. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, virus particles can travel up to six feet, infecting more people.
The virus spreads fastest and most often through infected people who have symptoms. It is possible to have the virus, not to exhibit any symptoms and to pass it onto other people.
If you are experiencing the symptoms of coronavirus, you should contact your general practitioner.
Community Spread
Community spread occurs when someone develops the virus without any known contact with an infected person.
What Are Your Chances Of Contracting Covid-19?
The current research indicates that an infected person will pass the virus on to 2-2.5 other people. Comparatively, someone who has the flu is likely to pass it on to 1.1 to 2.3 other people.
Who Is At Greatest Risk?
While people of all ages can develop the coronavirus, children tend to have milder symptoms than adults who contract it. Children can spread the virus and some of them have developed serious illnesses.
How To Protect Yourself And Stay Healthy?
Because there may be multiple ways to contract covid-19, it is advisable to follow the relevant safety protocol to protect yourself and your community.
- Wear a mask when in public to prevent person-to-person transmission
- Wash your hands regularly and use sanitiser when out in public
- Practice social distancing rules
- Stay up to date regarding the outbreaks and legislation updates in your area to remain compliant
- If you have Covid-19 symptoms, restrict your contact with pets and make sure you clean up pet waste properly
- If you are sick, self isolate, even within your home to prevent transmission from infected people to healthy people.
